I believe in the power of the press, and especially the Black Press of America, an industry that is now nearly 180 years old. In fact, as an editor, professor and syndicated columnist, I have learned from some of the best in the industry; Dr. Bill Lee (Sacramento Observer), Dr. Carlton Goodlett (San Francisco Sun Reporter), Richard Love (Long Beach Times) and Joe Coley (Bakersfield Observer), just to name a few of the California journalism elders. Last year community people began meeting with me to develop a quality product that would record the immediate, contemporary and timely realities of the African-American experience in the Central Valley. This newsletter, the CV Drum, and the Northern California Globe newspaper (2006) are the results of this effort. Please let us know what you think about the Drum each month. As you will see in these monthly messages, I and most Black publishers and editors know that a Black newspaper is most effective when it is weekly, and a newsletter is strongest when it provides information that their readers may seldom get anywhere else. Readers read newsletters because they are expecting a high quality product. The CV Drum will strive to provide detailed information about very specific subjects.
In addition to being the founder and editor in chief of the CV Drum, Dr. Hilton is an awarding-winning journalist, researcher and internationally syndicated columnist. Originally from the east coast, his Ph.D. is from Claremont Graduate University in Southern California. He and his wife, Sandra, have two daughters and two grandchildren.
